Chapter Ten

“How was the bonfire?” I asked Sean. We were sitting out on the deck of their house eating dessert. Wesley always insisted on serving multiple course dinners whenever they had company, even if it was just me. I told him he didn’t have to go through the trouble, but he claimed to enjoy it so I stopped ragging on him about it.

“It was fun,” he said with a big grin. “How was your ‘meeting’?” He put an inflection on the word “meeting”, and I groaned inwardly. He apparently hadn’t forgotten about the previous night.

“It was boring,” I said, waving his question off with my hand.

I turned to look at Wes and noticed he was staring at me oddly. I raised an eyebrow, and he just smiled and shook his head. I decided that marriage made people weird, and I should probably avoid it at all costs. There was no need for me to get any stranger.

“That’s too bad,” Sean said. “So did Riley fall under the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ act or something?”

“What are you talking about?” I asked, completely confused.

“Well, how did you get him as a newcomer? Were all the other sponsors too busy or something? Or is General Jerkoff finally relaxing the rules?”

“Yes, the other sponsors were taken,” I said slowly as I tried to figure out what he was getting at. Then it clicked. He still thought Riley and I had been together when he’d found us in the woods.

I wasn’t sure if I should correct him or let him think what he wanted. It was probably safer to let him think Riley and I were together because, if I told him we weren’t, he would want to know what I’d been doing on base that late.

Fuck, this was just getting more and more complicated. I decided to just leave it alone and hope for a change in subject. Fortunately, Wes realized I wanted out of the conversation and threw me a new topic.

“So, you don’t want to be Romeo?” he asked before Sean could start talking again.

“No, sorry. I’m really busy.”

“He’s afraid of Gabe and Toby,” Sean said with a laugh. “I told him it was Sara’s idea, and I’m sure she cleared it with her boys before offering. But he won’t have any part of it.”

“Look, what is everyone’s deal? I am hardly the Romeo type. Plus I don’t want to kiss Sara. Gross.”

Besides the fact she’s a girl—and that I could deal with—she’s my lover’s granddaughter. That was just wrong on too many levels. There was no way I could get over that, even to play a part on stage. Yuck.

“We just think that since you’re so…theatrical, it would be a good fit.”

“Did you just call me flaming?” I asked with a laugh.

“No!” Wes said quickly. “Not at all. It’s just such a passionate play, and you really are a fantastic actor. I’m sorry. We’ll all drop it.” He looked pointedly at Sean. “Won’t we?”

“Whatever.” Sean sighed. “I’m going to make some coffee.
